Learn More About SEND Empowerment Therapy

Understanding the whole child. Supporting the parents.

SEND Empowerment Therapy is a compassionate, person-centred service designed to help children and young people’s individual needs be better understood and appropriately supported.

It also provides parents and carers with a supportive, validating space to share their knowledge, experiences and concerns, helping them feel more confident and clear when advocating for their child and communicating with schools, services or local authorities.

At the heart of this approach is the belief that parents and carers are the experts on their own child. Their knowledge, experiences and concerns deserve to be heard, respected and taken seriously.

Many SEND parents experience difficulties gaining appropriate understanding and acknowledgement of their child’s needs—particularly within education and when communicating with schools, services or local authorities. SEND Empowerment Therapy provides a supportive space in which families can explore their child’s strengths, challenges, triggers and unmet needs without judgement.

The aim is to build a fuller picture of the child, identify practical and therapeutic ways to support them, and empower the family with greater understanding, confidence and clarity. It is also about helping parents and carers feel heard, validated and better supported as they advocate for their child.

A Whole-Person Approach

Every child is unique. Their behaviour, emotions, communication, sensory experiences, relationships, environment and physical well-being can all influence one another.

SEND Empowerment Therapy looks beyond what can be seen on the surface. Rather than asking simply, “How can we stop this behaviour?”, we explore:

  • What might the child be communicating?

  • What need could be going unmet?

  • What situations or demands may be contributing to distress?

  • What helps the child feel safe, understood and regulated?

  • What changes, support or protective “buffers” could make life more manageable?

  • How can the child’s strengths, interests and individual way of communicating be embraced?

The focus is not on changing who the child is. It is about improving understanding, reducing unnecessary distress and helping the child and family feel more supported and empowered.

The Process

1. Comprehensive Parent or Carer Consultation

The process begins with a relaxed and supportive consultation exploring your child’s individual strengths, needs, experiences and everyday life.

This may include communication, education, sensory needs, emotional well-being, relationships, independence, physical health, family life, interests, triggers and the support already in place.

You will not be expected to complete vast amounts of paperwork before receiving support. Information can be shared in a way that feels comfortable and manageable for you.

2. Flexible Child Engagement and Observation

The child or young person is included in a way that is appropriate, respectful and accessible to them.

This may involve gentle conversation, creative or interest-led activities, observation, adapted questions or simply spending time alongside them. Engagement can be as little or as much as the child feels comfortable with and will always be guided by their communication needs, emotional safety and willingness to participate.

There is no pressure to communicate in a particular way. A child’s behaviour, choices, interests and preferred methods of communication can all help us understand their experience.

3. Specialist SEND Empowerment Report

The information gathered is brought together within a personalised report presenting a whole-person picture of the child.

The report may include:

  • The child’s strengths, interests and protective factors

  • Identified needs, challenges and possible unmet needs

  • Communication and sensory considerations

  • Triggers and functional analysis

  • Emotional regulation and therapeutic needs

  • Supportive and preventative strategies

  • Environmental adaptations

  • Buffering strategies to reduce distress and demands

  • Recommendations for further support or referrals where appropriate

The report is intended to help parents, carers and those supporting the child develop a clearer and more compassionate understanding of their needs.

4. Parent and Carer Well-Being Support

Caring for and advocating for a child with additional needs can be emotionally and physically demanding. Parents may feel exhausted, dismissed, isolated or overwhelmed—particularly after repeatedly trying to secure appropriate support.

A separate parent or carer consultation provides a confidential space to feel heard and validated, consider your own well-being and explore the support you may need.

Where appropriate, a separate parent support summary can also be provided.

5. Review

A follow-up review allows us to explore:

  • What has worked well

  • What has improved

  • What remains difficult

  • Whether strategies need adapting

  • What further support may be helpful

Follow-Up Support Sessions

After completing the initial process, you will have the option to book additional support sessions for yourself or your child whenever they are needed.

These sessions may be helpful if new challenges arise, circumstances change, previous strategies need to be adapted or you simply feel that you or your child would benefit from continued support.

Follow-up support remains flexible and centred around the individual needs of your family. Sessions can be arranged as and when required, without any pressure to commit to a fixed programme.

A Supportive and Adaptable Experience

The entire process is designed to feel collaborative, flexible and manageable. There is no expectation for the child to fit into a rigid assessment process.

Families will be met with compassion, curiosity and respect. The purpose is not to judge parenting or place blame—it is to listen, understand and work together to identify meaningful ways forward. Its purpose is to gather meaningful information and produce a strong, detailed report that can help you advocate for your child’s needs to be properly understood and met by schools, local authorities and other services involved in their care and education.
